The space-saver — most UK homes have one
A combi (combination) boiler heats water on demand, straight from the mains. There's no cylinder and no tanks in the loft, so it frees up an airing cupboard and suits most flats and small-to-medium houses.
The multi-bathroom workhorse
A system boiler stores hot water in a cylinder, so several showers and taps can run at once without the temperature dropping. Most of the plumbing is built in, so there are no loft tanks.
The traditional setup — cylinder plus loft tanks
Also called a heat-only or conventional boiler. It works with a hot water cylinder and cold water tanks in the loft. If your home already has this setup and it works well, a like-for-like swap is often the cheapest, least disruptive option.
